The Afrobarometer Emerging Scholars Workshop is designed to foster analytical capacity among early career researchers while building mentoring networks across African research institutions. This initiative will also provide valuable professional development opportunities for African scholars.

The workshop will feature three key components:
- Paper Presentations: Selected participants will present their papers or research designs. Each presentation will last 10 minutes, followed by 50 minutes of feedback from a panel of academic mentors and peers.
- Professionalisation Sessions: Experienced academic mentors will deliver 45-minute to 1-hour sessions on key aspects of building a successful academic career. These sessions will offer practical advice on professional development within academia.
- Roundtable Conversations: After each presentation, there will be moderated roundtable discussions. Mentors will share their experiences and engage in interactive Q&A sessions with the audience, providing emerging scholars with insights into academic career building.
Eligibility Criteria for 2024 Afrobarometer Emerging Scholars Workshop
The workshop is open to:
- Early career researchers who have used Afrobarometer data significantly in their work.
- Researchers with draft papers or fully developed research proposals.
- PhD-level researchers who have completed their PhD within the last seven years or those who have begun academic (teaching or research) positions in the past five years.
- Scholars from disciplines related to Afrobarometer data, such as political science, sociology, public health, education, human geography, linguistics, public policy, law, and others.
- Applications must be in English, and successful candidates will also present in English. Afrobarometer encourages applications from young people, nursing mothers, and individuals with disabilities.
Benefits
- Travel costs, accommodation, meals, and related expenses will be covered by the organizers. Participants are responsible for additional personal expenses, including data, laundry, transportation, and entertainment.
- Participants will be accommodated at Future Africa Campus in Pretoria, South Africa. Economy flights will be booked, and routes may be longer to ensure cost-effectiveness.
