ACCEL Africa Project Training Program 2024 for Journalists
Journalists are invited to apply for the ACCEL Africa Project Training Program 2024, a free training initiative aimed at enhancing their skills and knowledge in reporting on child labor in African supply chains.
The program seeks to empower journalists to effectively amplify the efforts to eradicate child labor and stimulate public and policy-level support for this critical cause. Applications are now open for this valuable opportunity to make a positive impact through informed and effective reporting.
Overview
The ACCEL Africa Project’s second phase stands at the forefront of the global initiative to eradicate child labour from supply chains, particularly within the African context. With a refined understanding and comprehensive assessment from its first phase, the project is strategically positioned to address child labour by focusing on its root causes across selected countries and key supply chains, including tea and coffee, and the broader rural economy.

Targeted interventions are planned for Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Nigeria, and Uganda. In adhering to a systems-based approach, the project is dedicated to enhancing the mechanisms and frameworks essential for combating the underlying factors contributing to child labour. Within this strategic framework, the training for journalists against child labour in is conceived as a critical component directly related to the Project’s – Output 3.4. Relevant information on child labour in supply chains in Africa is documented and communicated to a wider audience – which, amongst others, aims to support the capacity-building of journalists and media professionals to regularly report on issues related to child labour.
This training aims to leverage the media’s influential role in society and its support to illustrate the complexities surrounding child labour and to stimulate public and policy-level support for its elimination. By equipping journalists with the requisite skills, knowledge, and ethical considerations for reporting on child labour, the initiative seeks to amplify the project’s objectives and contribute to the broader goal of eradicating child labour in supply chains across Africa.

Eligibility
- Must be a practicing journalist, media professional, or journalism student in the Cote d’Ivoire, Mali, Malawi, Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Ghana or Egypt.
- Preference will be given to journalists with experience in reporting on human rights, social issues, or on any of the following supply chains: gold, cotton, coffee, cocoa, tea.
- Currently residing and working in one of the targeted countries as mentioned above.
- Special consideration for applicants reporting in rural or vulnerable regions within these countries.
- Demonstrated interest or prior work related to child labour, human rights, or social justice.
- Willingness to engage in advocacy and public awareness activities post-training.
How to Apply
- Complete the online application
- Send your CV highlighting your professional experience as expressed above to: [email protected] with the subject – COUNTRY – NAME and LASTNAME– Voices against child labour.
- Motivation statement in 1 page only, detailing interest in the training and how it aligns with professional goals.
- Develop 1 story in first person for a real case, with 1-3 photos of the story subject. The story should portrait a real case of child labour, and a real solution which may have helped the subject overcome a challenge. The story can be of a child, a parent, or a family. For all stories, a signed consent form should be attached for each subject portrait. Kindly note that the form should be signed by the subject and not by yourself.
- Include a maximum of 1 page description of the story highlighting the context, the challenge, and the solution.
- A letter of recommendation from a current employer or a professional peer attesting to the applicant’s suitability for the training.
