African Professor Breaks Record, Emerges No. 1 Mathematician in the World

Abdon Atangana, a 39-year-old professor from Africa, has topped the list of the world’s best mathematicians, according to Stanford University. He teaches at the University of the Free State in South Africa and is ranked first in his field. He’s also 260th among all scientists and engineers in the world.
This is the second time he’s been the top scientist from his university on this list. The list is made by looking at how often a scientist’s work is used by others, and it includes the top 2% of scientists.
Abdon, originally from Cameroon, has lived in South Africa for 14 years. Last year, he was the second-best mathematician in the world. He’s known for creating new math concepts that help solve real problems in engineering and science. One of his big ideas is the Atangana-Baleanu calculus, which he made in 2016.

In 2020, he was named one of the top 1% of scientists by another big list, the Clarivate Web of Science. His work is really important for understanding complex issues in technology and other fields.
