David’s life took a tragic turn when gang members burned down his family’s home after he refused to join their ranks.
Undeterred, he continued his education, moving from one temporary shelter to another while attending high school.
Family Struggles:
David’s relationship with his parents was strained. He had minimal contact with his father, and he hadn’t lived regularly with his mother since eighth grade.
The family was forced to scatter to different locations after the gang attack.
Educational Journey:
Encouraged by the school nurse at his elementary school, David applied to MC2STEM High School in Cleveland, along with the John Hay School of Science and Medicine and the district’s gifted program.

During his first two years at MC2STEM, David stayed with the school principal.
He viewed education as his escape route, believing that attending college would break the cycle of adversity for his family.
Scholarships and Acceptances:
Through hard work and the support of teachers, mentors, and family, David earned the prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarship. He also received the Ron Brown Scholarship.
Impressively, David was accepted by 22 colleges and universities, including Harvard. His only rejection came from his top choice, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Future Aspirations:
David plans to major in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Harvard. He eagerly anticipates the challenges that studying at Harvard will bring.
David firmly believes that he can make a positive impact on the world, and he won’t consider himself successful until he does so.
David’s success owes much to his participation in the extracurricular program called Minds Matter. Minds Matter’s mission is to support high-achieving students from low-income families, helping them achieve academic excellence and gain admission to college.
