Submission Guidelines

Submissions are only accepted during designated open call periods for each quarterly issue.
Interested contributors can stay informed about themes and submission calls by subscribing to the newsletter or following Dilettante Army on social media.
You will also be able to see the Open Call under “Upcoming Issue” at the top of their Issues page.
Dilettante Army seeks pieces that engage with visual analysis, critical theory, and close text reading.
Preferred topics revolve around social justice, politics, and art.
While personal essays are not accepted, imaginative pieces, poetry, and visual essays are encouraged.
The platform does not publish personal essays but favors pitches over completed pieces. However, if submitting a completed piece, a thorough summary should accompany the email pitch.
To promote inclusivity and reserve space for emerging voices, Dilettante Army generally waits until five issues have passed since a contributor’s last publication (approximately 1 1/2 years) before considering repeat submissions.

Pitch Requirements

Email pitches to Editor-in-Chief Sara Clugage at [email protected], including your name and piece title.
For expository writing, provide a thesis statement and key supporting points.
Successful pitches outline the field of inquiry, objects of analysis, arguments, supporting points, relevant thinkers, and the essay’s relevance to the theme.
If available, please include links to your previous writing to give them a sense of your scholarship and style.

Eligibility Criteria

Contributors from diverse backgrounds and experiences are welcome to submit their work.
Dilettante Army values fresh perspectives and original insights into art, visual culture, and feminism.
There is no entry fee.

Payment

Authors receive a standard flat fee of $500 per published piece, acknowledging the value of their contributions to the journal.
