Exploratory Grant Funds for Early-Career African Researchers | Up to $10,000

Empowering early-career researchers in Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire, Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) announces the Exploratory Grant for researchers affiliated with institutions in these regions.

Aligned with IPA’s Researcher Diversification Initiative, this initiative aims to enhance diversity in research perspectives.

Two selected projects (one in Côte d’Ivoire and one in Burkina Faso) will receive funding of $10,000 (USD) each.

This grant is designed to support early-career researchers in Africa, fostering independent research agendas and enabling evidence-based studies that address global poverty challenges.

Objectives

  • Support talented early-career African researchers in establishing independent research agendas.
  • Facilitate evidence-based, high-quality research addressing global poverty challenges.
  • Encourage early-stage research from African scholars that informs future impact evaluation research.
  • Provide an opportunity for researchers to gain experience in grant applications and management.
  • Improve collaboration among researchers, policymakers, and implementers, emphasizing community participation.

Eligibility and Requirements:

  • Open to early-career researchers affiliated with universities or research organizations in Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire.
  • Applicants must align with IPA FWA’s research priorities, covering Mental Health, Education, Early Childhood
  • Development in Côte d’Ivoire, and Social Protection, Environment and Climate, Agriculture, Health, and Early
  • Childhood Development in Burkina Faso.
  • Grants aim to fund exploratory work developing preliminary research ideas, such as travel, relationship development, data collection, and research assistance.
  • Awards capped at USD $10,000 (plus OH).
  • Project duration: 4 months (March to June 2024).

Evaluation Criteria

Projects will be evaluated based on academic contribution, policy relevance, technical design, project viability, and the overall value of research.

Submission Process:

  • Submissions (proposal narrative, budget in USD, and CV) should be sent to [email protected].
  • Proposals should be in both French and English.

Additional Considerations:

  • Ethical considerations: Reviewers will assess risks to research participants and mitigation strategies.
  • Team diversity: Encouraging diverse research teams and interdisciplinary collaboration.
