A Breakthrough for People and Planet: Project Overview

The Secretary-General announced the formation of a High-Level Advisory Board (HLAB) on Effective Multilateralism in March 2022. It was tasked with taking stock of deficits in existing global governance arrangements, as well as emerging priorities for international cooperation. The Board’s point of departure was the call in the Our Common Agenda report for new investments in multilateralism that can support transformation toward more networked, inclusive, and effective cooperative governance arrangements.

Following a year of public consultations and internal deliberations, the final report of the HLAB was presented to the Secretary-General in April 2023. UNU-CPR, which served as HLAB Secretariat, is engaged in building understanding, appreciation, and momentum for the bold recommendations in the report amongst different stakeholder groups ahead of the Summit of the Future in September 2024. Description of Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the UNU-CPR Director and project personnel, the Junior Fellow (intern) will:

  • Attend Our Common Agenda thematic briefings at UN Headquarters and other relevant meetings and
  • produce summary notes for the UNU-CPR project team;
  • Conduct background research for talking points and briefing notes on relevant HLAB and Our Common

Agenda topics;

  • Conduct literature reviews on specific topics relevant to HLAB and Our Common Agenda;
  • Identify suitable experts and institutions that can partner with UNU-CPR on HLAB dissemination;
  • Coordinate meetings, briefings and workshops related to HLAB;
  • Perform administrative and other duties as assigned.

Learning objectives

  • Gaining an understanding of key issues under consideration regarding effective multilateralism.
  • Developing a familiarity with the United Nations system and an awareness and knowledge of issues that are of critical importance to the United Nations, its Member States, and the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Gaining exposure to the research and related work of UNU and UNU-CPR and gaining an understanding of the potential solutions and innovations that are driving change across the UN system.

Qualifications

Education:

  • University studies in one of the following disciplines: journalism, law, communications, development, economics, international relations, peace and security, or other relevant subjects is required.
  • Be enrolled in a graduate degree programme or within the two-year post-graduation (maximum) from a graduate degree programme.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.

Skills:

The candidate:

  • has excellent research, writing and analytical skills;
  • can establish and maintain effective working relations with people from diverse backgrounds;
  • demonstrates resourcefulness and creativity in problem-solving;
  • has advanced computer skills: sound, hands-on, knowledge of MS Office applications (familiarity with ICT tools and high level of proficiency in Microsoft Excel are desirable);
  • has a demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and more specifically, in the work of the United Nations University.

Location:

This is an in-person position, requiring regular attendance at UNU-CPR’s office in New York City.

Stipend

Interns who are not in receipt of financial support from other sources such as universities or other institutions will receive a stipend from UNU to partially subsidize their basic living costs for the duration of the internship.

The monthly amount of the stipend will be determined for each duty station based on the stipend rates in effect. For New York the rate is USD1,000 per month. The stipend will be paid on a monthly basis and part-time internship arrangements are prorated accordingly.

  1. Duration of contract: The duration of the internship is approx 7 months.
  2. Expected start date:  4 March 2024
  3. Expected end date: 30 September 2024
